Things To Clarify Before You Select An FIBC Bag

FIBCs are available in different types and sizes. You, therefore, need to consider several factors, apart from the cost when selecting FIBC for shipping non-hazardous substances. At Rishi FIBC, a reputed FIBC bag manufacturer in India, we produce a huge range of jumbo bag types so you can easily find your best match.

Here we discuss the factors you must pay attention to when placing an order for FIBC bags:

Material to be transported

The foremost thing that you need to consider is the material you are going to transport in the bulk bag. You need to be sure about the nature of the material to be transported. If you are to transport fine particles to be used in industrial applications, you need to be cautious as the dust of most chemical substances is explosive. When dispersed in the air, a majority of the industrial dust is explosible. If you are not sure, you can conduct a “Standard Test Method for Explosibility of Dust Clouds” to determine if the material is explosible or not.

If the material is detected to be explosible, you will need to find out the Minimum Ignition Energy (MIE) of the dust material, which is the lowest electrostatic spark energy that could ignite a dust cloud.

Another factor that plays a crucial role when selecting an FIBC is the evaluation of the surroundings when filling and discharging the bulk bag. You need to find out if flammable vapor or gases would be present when the bag is being filled and discharged. Besides, you also need to evaluate the ability of powdered particles inside the bag to generate or retain an electrostatic charge when it is being processed, filled, or discharged.

Jumbo Bag Types You Must Know

Currently, four types of FIBCs are available in the market viz:

  • Type A (Insulating) – Such bags do not provide any protection against static discharge. These should be used when flammable vapors and gases are not likely to be present during the loading and unloading process.
  • Type B (Insulating) – These are designed to protect from propagating brush discharge. Like Type A, Type B FIBCs are not recommended for use when flammable gases or vapors are likely to be present during loading and unloading.
  • Type C (Conducting) – These are made up of inter-connected conductive threads. Such FIBCs need to be grounded. These are designed for use when flammable gases and vapors with MIE > 0.14mJ are likely to be present when FIBCs are being loaded and unloaded.
  • Type D (Static Dissipative) – Such FIBCs have interwoven specialist antistatic threads/ specialist antistatic coatings and therefore these do not require grounding. Type D FIBCs can be used when flammable gases and vapors with MIE>0.14mJ are present during loading and unloading.

Selecting the Liners

A liner is often used along with an FIBC bag. It can either come embedded inside the FIBC or it can be loosely attached. A liner protects both – the FIBC and also the material you put in the bag. Like FIBCs, there are various types and varieties of liners. You need to be sure of the electrostatic properties of the liner material, its surface sensitivity, thickness, resistance to groundable point, and breakdown voltage when selecting a liner.

Size and Other Important Specifications of the FIBC

Needless to say, you need to buy FIBC of an apt size. Its width should fit into your carrier. It should have strong lifting loops that can hold the weight of the filled bags. Also, check the discharge outlet of the bag when selecting an FIBC. The discharge outlet should be large enough to ensure smooth pouring of the material.
